Video: The Rolling Bridge In Paddington

This cool bridge was designed by Thomas Heatherwick and can be found in Paddington (Basin, London). But before you continue to the pictures, you really ought to see it's commercial clip:




The design:

This bridge consists of eight triangular sections hinged at the walkway level and connected above by two part links that may be collapsed toward the deck by hydraulic pistons, which are concealed in vertical posts in the bridge parapets. When extended, it resembles a conventional steel and timber footbridge, and is 12 metres long. However, to allow the passage of boats, the bridge can be made to curl up until its two ends touch, to form an octagonal shape measuring one half of the waterway's width at that point.

The Rolling Bridge is curled up every Friday at noon.

In 2005, the bridge won the British Structural Steel Design Award

Jean-Pierre Houdin Says Pyramid Mystery Solved

"Inside out":

PARIS (Reuters) - A French architect said on Friday he had cracked a 4,500-year-old mystery surrounding Egypt's Great Pyramid, saying it was built from the inside out.

Previous theories have suggested Pharaoh Khufu's tomb, the last surviving example of the seven great wonders of antiquity, was built using either a vast frontal ramp or a ramp in a corkscrew shape around the exterior to haul up the stonework.

But flouting previous wisdom, Jean-Pierre Houdin said advanced 3D technology had shown the main ramp which was used to haul the massive stones to the apex was contained 10-15 meters beneath the outer skin, tracing a pyramid within a pyramid.

"This is better than the other theories, because it is the only theory that works," Houdin told Reuters after unveiling his hypothesis in a lavish ceremony using 3D computer simulation.

Via this blog (link in spanish) a guy, who works in the department of a Human Resources consultancy company, says they made a selection process in which, among other things, they asked for a person with ample experience in using the internet (navigation, searches, formats...).

They received 50 candidacies, from which 30 came from Hotmail-directions, all of them erased as they entered.

The reason: You can't pretend being an internet expert and use a Hotmail account at the same time.

Google Gives Away Bikes

Google is improving its green credentials by offering all of its employees a free bike to ride to work.

The bikes, manufactured by Raleigh Europe, will be offered to around 2,000 permanent employees of the search engine giant in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. All of the bikes - plus free helmets - will be branded with the Google name.

Holger Meyer, Germany's first Google employee, came up with the idea and staff will be able to choose from a range of models including a "cool cruiser" - a folding bike for those that only make part of their trip to work under pedal power - and men's and women's hybrids.

But Ajit Ghosh, the owner of the missing chickens, eventually solved the puzzle when he caught his cow - a sacred animal for the Hindu family - gobbling up several of them at night.

Anyway, how do the anti-burp pills work?

"Our aim is to increase the wellbeing of the cow, to reduce the greenhouse gases produced and to increase agricultural production all at once," said Winfried Drochner, professor of animal nutrition, who has led the ground-breaking project at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart. "It is an effective way of fighting global warming."

Prof Drochner wants to use the pill to trap some of the energy from the methane, which is naturally produced in the fermentation process when a cow digests grass and is later mostly burped out through their mouths. Until now it has been wasted.

"We could use the energy to boost the cow's metabolism," he said. The idea is that the cows would use the methane to produce glucose instead of passing it as wind. In turn this should help them to produce more milk.

"The fist-sized tablets mean that microbiotic substances can slowly dissolve in the cow's stomach over several months," said Prof Drochner.

Over the past 50 years the concentration of methane in the atmosphere has increased six-fold. With meat consumption growing, it is set to rise further.

Death threats for moderate muslims seem to be a rising issue, which actually is a good thing. India: Honor Killing: Student Abducted And Murdered

An international team of mathematicians has cracked a 120-year-old puzzle that researchers say is so complicated its handwritten solution would cover the island of Manhattan.

The 18-member group of mathematicians and computer scientists was convened by the American Institute of Mathematics in Palo Alto to map a theoretical object known as the "Lie group E8."

Lie (pronounced Lee) groups were invented by 19th-century Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie in his study of symmetrical objects, especially spheres, and differential calculus.

The E8 group, which dates to 1887, is the most complicated Lie group, with 248 dimensions, and was long considered impossible to solve.

"To say what precisely it is is something even many mathematicians can't understand," said Jeffrey Adams, the project's leader and a math professor at the University of Maryland.

The wife in the West is not obligated to do so. Moreover, a wife can be raped by her husband there. They claim that if he has sex with her against her will - this is rape! They consider this rape. They claim she must be willing. They claim that she must want it. There is a disagreement in the West on this issue. Some do give the husband the right to whatever he wants, but in many other cases they don't. Therefore, the wife doesn't submit to the man whenever he wants.

KABUL, Afghanistan - One woman committed suicide by setting herself ablaze after her father-in-law tried to rape her. Another set herself on fire because her brothers would not let her marry, preferring that she remain their servant at home. Yet another told her mother before she died that her husband beat her daily.

Testimony gathered by the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission documents how life for many Afghan women remains so bleak that some choose a horrific and painful death instead.

The group interviewed about 800 Afghans whose sisters, daughters and daughters-in-law have killed themselves by self-immolation to escape domestic abuse, forced marriage and other misogynistic social customs.

SOKOTO, Nigeria, March 14 – Beginning in November of last year, 13-year-old Victor Udo Usen, a member of the Christ Apostolic Church in this northern Nigeria city, went missing.

On February 20, news that young Victor was spotted in a Muslim neighbor’s house jolted his family. A young Christian girl had raced to the Usens’ home in the Mabera area of Sokoto city with the news.

Victor’s mother, Esther Udo Usen, told Compass that she ran to the house where her son had been seen. She met him, however, even as he was making frantic efforts to escape from the house where he has been held incommunicado for six months.

“I quickly held his hands and dragged him along with me towards our house,” she said. “But within a twinkle of an eye, I heard shouts of ‘Allahu Akbar ! Allahu Akbar ! Allahu Akbar [God is great] !’ I was shocked as I saw a large number of Muslims rushing towards us.”

The mob surrounded them and snatched her son away from her, she told Compass with tears in her eyes.

Before she could send for her husband, who was not home at the time, members of the mob told her that her son was now a Muslim and that she and her husband were no longer his parents.

“They abducted him in November last year, and I only saw him today,” she told Compass. “How can someone force my son into his religion?”

This disgrace has become a common phenomenon in majority-Muslim Sokoto state.

And nothing is being done in order to protect the children from "religious predators".

The barbers in the two main towns of Dir Upper, Dir and Wari, received threatening pamphlets against trimming and shaving off beards. They were warned of the “worst storm” if they failed to abandon the “un-Islamic” practice.

Barbers in Wari decided at a meeting they would not shave off or trim beards following the threatening pamphlets. They decided to impose a fine of Rs 5,000 on violators in view of the threat of dire consequences.

The Chongqing Zhengsheng Real Estate Company wants to turn the area into a £40m 'Broadway' square, including apartments and a shopping mall.

But the owner of the villa says he won't move out unless the company pays his price - the equivalent of £1.3 million.

"The villa owner refuses to move, so the real-estate developer has had to dig out all around it to force him to," says a saleswoman at Weilian Real Estate Sales Company.

"He wants 20 million yuan, or he'll stay till the end of the world."

The image, which portrays Jesus with female parts, was created by a Spanish photographer for a new book but has become a major election issue there.

Two photo books featuring nude models portraying religious figures in sexual positions have led to political figures demanding to know how public funds could be used for the project.

Critics have argued it is one of the most disgusting wasts of taxpayers' money ever and they have questioned the lunacy of the bureaucrats who approved such a grant in deeply Catholic Spain.

The books were published some time ago, but the issue exploded in Spain yesterday when the Right-wing Popular Party seized on it to campaign on moral issues for Spanish regional and local elections .

The black-and-white photos from artist Jose Antonio "Jam" Montoya include representations of Jesus and Mary.

The art exhibit catalogues were co-financed by the socialist regional government of Estremadure in southwest Spain. That has led to strong criticism from the opposition.

The Popular Party said in a statement that the publication of the books "with public funds represents an offense, a serious attack on everyone's ethical and aesthetic sensibilities".

Furthermore, I doubt we will see rioting, flag burning or other kinds of violence, despite the publication of the following photos (link in spanish).

Pakistan: Women Increasingly Suffer Forced Conversions And Violence

If you belong to a religious minority and you're a woman, Pakistan is not the place to be:

The annual report by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan shows that the number of incidents of discrimination and violence against women is increasing, especially against members of religious minorities.

The report noted that last year forced conversions of minority women, rape and arranged marriages for minors were on the increase, destroying the lives of thousands of young women and teenagers.

Forced conversion is especially true for Christian women and girls working in Muslim households or small factories, where they are abducted, raped and then forced to convert to Islam.

Marry the Quran and you'll never be permitted to marry a man:

“It was extremely odd – and, of course, very tragic. And under Pakistani law, families can escape punishment by following a few simple steps: a brother ‘confesses’ to having killed his sister. His father ‘forgives’ him, or accepts blood money. No money actually changes hands and the matter is closed.

“This is a terrible brutalisation of society. It is outrageous that such crimes take place,” Asma Jahangir, a leading lawyer, rights activist and United Nations rapporteur said.

In Pakistan, Mukhtaran Mai, a rape victim who has become a women's rights campaigner, led a march in Karachi.

"It is a long struggle for the women of Pakistan to get the place they deserve in society," she said. "Women in many areas of Pakistan are not allowed to cast votes nor can they contest elections."

Mai was gang-raped and left naked on the orders of a tribal council in 2002 as punishment for her brother's alleged affair with a woman from another tribe.

A 19-year-old Saudi woman who was kidnapped, beaten and gang raped by seven men who then took photos of their victim and threatened to kill her, was sentenced under the country's Islamic-based law to 90 lashes for the "crime" of being alone with a man not related to her.

She met the man at a shopping mall and, after driving off together, the blackmailer's car was stopped by two other cars bearing men wielding knives and meat cleavers.

During the next three hours, the woman was raped 14 times by her seven captors.

One of the men took pictures of her naked with his mobile phone and threatened to blackmail her with them.

And where is the global outrage against these atrocities fulfilled in the name of a constant backward religion, the religion of peace?

St. Petersburg Declaration:

Secularists such as Ibn Warraq, Nonie Darwish and Irshad Manji helped formulate the "St. Petersburg Declaration," which seeks to do no less than eliminate traditional understandings and practices of Islam that conflict with universally accepted human rights.

Darwish, who read the statement in Arabic – others presented it in English, Bengali and Farsi – believes the statement will resonate with untold millions.

"You cannot believe the hunger of Muslims to hear what we're saying right now," said Darwish, a native of Egypt and a founder of ArabsForIsrael.com. "At least 50 percent will tell us, you are right, but don't reveal my name. They are so scared to speak out. To live in the Middle East and say what we're saying is a death sentence."

About CAIR:

"They don't speak for us," Darwish said in response during a question and answer session at the conference. "CAIR represents the best interests of radical Islam."

Moderate muslims cower in silence:

No amount of Islamo-propaganda can obscure the fact that extremist Muslims kill other Muslims with whom they disagree as well as the "infidels" whom they so despise. Moderate Muslim leaders who believe in more modern, pluralistic values and who would criticize the extremists if they had a chance cower in silence in fear of their lives. When a government run by strict adherence to Islamic law takes control, those who do not conform are jailed or executed. Women are treated like chattel. And, sadly, Islam has been used to justify legions of al Qaeda and Shiite fanatics to fight to the death -- theirs and ours -- in order to establish their vision of a global Muslim caliphate.

A phobia is defined in Webster's dictionary as an "inexplicable and illogical fear of a particular object, class of objects, or situation." Fear of Islamic extremism and its potentially catastrophic consequences is not inexplicable or illogical. It is a rational reaction to dangerous, irrational people who would use weapons of mass destruction to bring about their apocalyptic vision.

Illogical fear?



Rational fear. Not islamophobia.



Well, I am to be considered an infidel and I kind of feel outraged that some muslims believe it's their duty to kill me. But hey, it's the religion of peace!

Periodically, in order to foment the understanding of the religion of peace. De Standaard is a mass-circulating newspaper in Belgium:

BRUSSELS, March 2 (KUNA) -- Belgium's De Standaard (The Standard) reported here on Friday that it would begin a serial publication of the Muslim Holy Qur'an in Flemish language as of Monday.

The new move would help Belgian people understand the Muslim holy book in a better manner in order to differentiate between the religion of Islam and terrorism, De Standaard, a leading intellectual daily of Flanders, the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, reported.

I look forward to see these verses from the Quran published:

Sura (2:191) - And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution [of Muslims] is worse than slaughter [of non-believers]

Sura (2:244) - Then fight in the cause of Allah, and know that Allah Heareth and knoweth all things.

Sura (2:216) - Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not.

Sura (3:56) - As to those who reject faith, I will punish them with terrible agony in this world and in the Hereafter, nor will they have anyone to help.

Sura (3:151) - "Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority." This speaks directly of killing Christians, since they believe in the Trinity (ie. what Muhammad incorrectly believed to be 'joining companions to Allah').

Sura (4:74) - Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward.

Sura (4:76) - “Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah…”

Sura (4:89) - They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks

Hadith:

Bukhari (52:177) - Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him."

Bukhari (52:256) - The Prophet... was asked whether it was permissible to attack the pagan warriors at night with the probability of exposing their women and children to danger. The Prophet replied, "They (i.e. women and children) are from them (i.e. pagans)." In this command, Muhammad establishes that it is permissible to kill non-combatants in the process of killing a perceived enemy. This provides justification for the many Islamic terror bombings.

Abu Dawud (14:2526) - The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Three things are the roots of faith: to refrain from (killing) a person who utters, "There is no god but Allah" and not to declare him unbeliever whatever sin he commits, and not to excommunicate him from Islam for his any action; and jihad will be performed continuously since the day Allah sent me as a prophet until the day the last member of my community will fight with the Dajjal (Antichrist)

Abu Dawud (14:2527) - The Prophet said: Striving in the path of Allah (jihad) is incumbent on you along with every ruler, whether he is pious or impious

Muslim (1:33) - the Messenger of Allah said: I have been commanded to fight against people till they testify that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah

Bukhari (8:387) - Allah's Apostle said, "I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah

Editors of "De Standaard", are you prepared to publish the verses above and the ones included in the link? If you don't, why? Is it too cruel? Frightened over the consequences?

But what am I talking about, as a non-believer (one of those who, according to the Quran, ought to be slain) I cannot understand the meaning of these verses. Or the islamists will just say it's taken out of context.

Saudi Arabia: Religious Moral Police Not Keen On Love

The Religious Moral Police of Saudi Arabia can't handle the message of love and peace that may be transmitted by books. Now you know - no knowledge in books, just sins:

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, March 1 (UPI) -- Publishers displaying books at an international book fair in Saudi Arabia are coming under scrutiny and pressure by religious police.

Saudi Arabia's semi-official al-Watan daily said Thursday the religious police tried to remove exhibited books on love and different religions at the Riyadh International Book Fair that opened Tuesday.

The paper quoted an Egyptian publisher as saying a group of young local men, accompanied by a mutawa, or government-authorized religious police enforcing Islamic law, entered his booth and asked the publisher to remove some books.

I wish our police were as thorough as the religious moral police. Look, they even prevented girls from leaving this burning building, because they weren't wearing the correct Islamic dress. Muhammad must be really satisfied, and I'm convinced he'll send them all straight to heaven, where the 72 virgins await.

But the people of Saudi Arabia don't seem to understand the necessity and importance of these moral guardians:

The government last year took away some of the mutawa's powers, but they remain recognized as religious police enforcing tough Islamic sharia, or law, in the Islamic Arab kingdom. The mere report appearing in a semi-official Saudi newspaper indicates growing discontent with the religious police.

It's a shame. But you should know that other worshippers of the religion of peace are doing some efforts concerning the morality question:

Police investigators say the women were prostitutes, and that while no group has claimed responsibility, they're investigating whether they were killed by the Swords of Islamic Righteousness, a shadowy new group that's looking to purge Gaza of what it considers the corrupting influence of Western culture.

Spain's worst terrorist killer freed from hospital

MADRID - An ETA terrorist who has killed 25 people left hospital on Thursday to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest after a 100-day hunger strike.

José Ignacio de Juana Chaos, who has served 18 years for his crimes, was released from secure custody in hospital where he had been serving the rest of his three year sentence.

De Chaos had been admitted to hospital after he started a hunger strike in November in protest at a new sentence imposed for writing two articles which a court ruled made terrorist threats.

The decision to let De Chaos out of hospital and serve the remains of his term at home will be hugely controversial.

Some government figures believe De Chaos would have starved himself to death, giving the Basque separatist organisation ETA an excuse to launch more bomb attacks.

I guess he's home having a great T-bone steak for dinner. And the families of the victims are crying of pain...

Disgraceful.

De Chaos' (what a name for a terrorist) supporters celebrated his arrival. I assume none of the ones in this picture felt sorry for the families of the 25 victims.

Dutch Politician Geert Wilders: "Prophet Muhammed a Violent Man"

Mr. Wilders, who said muslims should throw away half the Quran and not listen to their imams, is at it again.

Islam is taking over, says Dutch politician

On the burqa, Mr Wilders is adamant: "It is a medieval token of a barbaric time, of how not to treat women, even if they want to wear it themselves," he argues.

Allowing Muslims to wear the burqa in the Netherlands, or to have segregated swimming sessions so as not to offend religious sensitivities, amounts to "religious apartheid" he says.

Wilders is convinced there is growing support for his views across Europe but its political leaders, particularly in Britain, are too obsessed with being politically correct.

"There is almost no country more politically correct than the UK. Look at the terrible things that happened in London after Madrid, you have more reason than most to make this debate transparent and public," he said.

And his party, The Freedom Party, gets more and more support among the Dutch:

The Freedom Party has jumped from six to 10 per cent in opinion polls since November. His passionate campaign for a ban on the Islamic veil, or burqa, in public places is gaining such momentum that the country's new coalition government could be forced to introduce the ban it does not support.

And as always, the death threats from the religion of peace:

Mr Wilders split from the Dutch liberals in September 2004 over their support for EU membership for Turkey.

Two months later he was living in fear after police arrested suspected terrorists, armed with grenades, accused of planning to kill him. The Dutch politician says he and his wife have received more than 600 death threats.

Mr Wilders, who is always surrounded by plain clothes police guards, said: "I lost my freedom and privacy because of my opposition to Islam."

Germany: Ex-Muslim Says "Islam Inherently Radical"

A new group is formed in Germany: "The National Council of Ex-Muslims" (link in german language). Their goal is to help women and men to leave the religion of peace without being stoned to death. Or anything similar. And, of course, they've already received death threats from RoP-worshippers...

Islam is inherently radical:

Arzu Toker, deputy chairwoman, used a news conference to announce her separation from Islam: 'I herewith resign from Islam. That's it.'

Toker, a journalist who was born in 1952 in Turkey's eastern Anatolia region, is radical in her criticism of Islam. She does not accept its Sharia system of rules at all, saying they contradict both human rights and the values of the German constitution.

She added that Islam was anti-woman.

'It humiliates women and turns them into servants of the men,' she said, adding the Islam was anti-man as well.

'It reduces men to breeding animals controlled by their urges,' said Toker. She quoted the 19th century German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche: 'He said, God is dead. One can live fine by taking one's own responsibility.'

She said she did not distinguish between Islam and fundamentalism.

'Islam is inherently radical,' she said.

Ahadi described her life to reporters and said, 'Political Islam has afflicted my life.' Born in Iran in 1956, her support for human rights had rapidly put her in opposition to the Islamic Revolution. She refused to wear a headscarf and was expelled from university.

Later her husband was executed. She had lived in Germany since 1996.

'I know all about political Islam,' she said. 'It ends up with us being stoned to death, even here in Germany.'

Death threats:

Ahadi has been put under police protection in recent days. Renouncing Islam can carry the death penalty in a number of countries including Iran, Saudi-Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan and Mauritania. In other countries people who turn their backs on the faith aren't punished by courts, but they are often ostracized by family and friends. It's a difficult subject among Muslim communities in Europe too.

Chairwoman Ahadi criticizes the Central Council of Muslims in Germany:

SPIEGEL: Together with 29 other immigrants from Muslim countries you have declared that you have renounced Islam. The campaign is similar to one launched in the 1970s by women who declared publicly that they had had abortions. What is your purpose?

Ahadi: I haven't been a Muslim for 30 years. I'm also critical of Islam in Germany and of the way the German government deals with the issue of Islam. Many Muslim organisations like the Central Council of Muslims in Germany (ZMD) or Milli Görüs engage in politics or interfere in people's everyday lives. They were invited to the conference on Islam (hosted by the government in Berlin last year). But their aims are hostile to women and to people in general."

SPIEGEL: Why?

Ahadi: They want to force women to wear the headscarf. They promote a climate in which girls aren't allowed to have boyfriends or go to discos and in which homosexuality is demonized. I know Islam and for me it means death and pain.

SPIEGEL: What will your organization do?

Ahadi: One example: One representative of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany said that a carnival procession float (during the recent carnival in Germany) showing Islamists with explosive belts had offended Muslims. But there was no evidence of that. The associations pretend that they represent everyone and to some extent are acknowledged as such by the German side. That's bad. We have to give a signal against that and say: Not in our name. We are secular humanists. We want to give these people a voice. Someone has to make a start. We're advocating human rights.

SPIEGEL: Some of your members are also active in communist organizations in their home countries.

Ahadi: Yes, many were active in left-wing groups. We have received more than 100 membership applications in recent days. We want to create a new movement, in other European countries too. We hope that soon there will be 10,000 of us representing many more people.

SPIEGEL: Won't your campaign just harden the battle lines?

Ahadi: I don't think it's possible to modernize Islam. We want to form a counterweight to the Muslim organisations. The fact that we're doing this under police protection shows how necessary our initiative is.

Mina Ahadi was born in Iran in 1956. She started her political activities when she was only 14, by setting up discussion clubs and libraries and performances. In the Iranian revolution of 1979, she who was by then a university student was actively involved. When the Islamic government got to power and with Khomeini’s Fatwa for compulsory Islamic veiling, she did not hesitate organizing meetings and Demonstrations against this government. Her first major public speech was in a gathering of more than two thousand women in the city of Tabriz and soon after that she was expelled from University.

Mina, who had been recognized by authorities, had to go underground and a year later her house was raided and her husband and some other friends were arrested. She escaped only because she was not at home at that time. Her husband was executed soon after and she had to leave her home town and go to liberated areas of Kurdistan in 1980.

She stayed in Kurdistan continuing her struggles against the Islamic Republic of Iran for ten years and in 1990 she went to Vienna. Mina Ahadi has lived in Europe ever since and has been actively involved in struggles against the Iranian government and for women’s rights.

Yes, it really exists:

Fucking (IPA: /ˈfʊkɪŋ/ — it rhymes with the English word "cooking") is a small settlement (population c. 93), part of the municipality of Tarsdorf, in the Innviertel region of western Upper Austria, located at 48°04′02″N, 12°51′49″E, bordering Bavaria. It is near the city of Salzburg, and also the town of "Tittmoning". The village is known to have existed as “Fucking” since at least 1070 and is named after a man from the 6th century called Focko. “Ing” is an old Germanic suffix meaning “people”; thus Fucking, in this case, means “place of Focko’s people”.

The settlement’s most famous feature is a traffic sign with its name on it, beside which English-speaking tourists often stop to have their photograph taken. It is a commonly stolen street sign. Significant amounts of public funds are spent on replacing the stolen signs. In August 2005 the road signs were replaced with theft-proof signs welded to steel and secured in concrete to make the signs harder to take.

In 2004, due to the stolen signs and embarrassment over the name, a vote was held on changing the name, but the town's residents voted against doing so.
