"More than 200 illegal immigrants reach the Canaries at the weekend" is a frequent headline in Spanish newspapers:
The Coastguard have rescued 39 illegal immigrants from a vessel which had been adrift at sea for two days, since setting off from Morocco on Friday morning. Rescue services began the search for the boat after the 112 emergency number in Las Palmas received a call for help on Saturday. They were finally located to the south of Fuerteventura at 2.30 on Sunday afternoon. There were two babies and four women on board. Most of the passengers were said to be in good health.
Another three boatloads of illegal immigrants arrived on the Canary Islands on Saturday, 187 in total that day.
This has lamentably been going on for years and now
Spain has reached its capacity for receiving immigrants (no surprise here), the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Bernardino Leon said on Friday:
With more than 9,500 migrants flooding the Spanish Canary Islands this year in ramshackle boats, Madrid has launched a diplomatic offensive offering aid to stem the tide from West Africa and return the immigrants to their countries of origin.
"Spain does not have the capacity to accept more workers," Leon told a news conference.
Spain has provided residence papers for some 7,000 Malian illegal immigrants. Its socialist government launched an amnesty for about 600,000 illegal immigrants last year.
But Leon said any new arrivals would face either a life on the run as an illegal alien or repatriation.
The European Union has finally decided to deploy vessels and aircraft to intercept boats carrying undocumented immigrants before they leave West African waters:
Four vessels, a reconnaissance plane and a helicopter deployed by the EU in July will seek to intercept immigrant boats in the territorial waters of Senegal, Mauritania and Cape Verde, according to the paper.
The migrants will then be handed over to the local authorities. So far, only Mauritania has authorised the EU to patrol its waters, but agreements with Senegal and Cape Verde were reportedly in the pipeline.
A coordination centre will be established on the Canary Island of Tenerife, where EU experts will help in tasks such as identifying immigrants.
The countries involved are Spain, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Finland, France, Italy, Poland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Norway, Britain and Austria.
And now the U.S can be affected too because the African mafia gangs are building a huge canoa ("supercayuco" - a bigger indian canoa), with capacity for 100 passengers. They plan to use it to send illegal immigrants from Africa to the U.S.
I´ve translated the following from
this article published Friday in
El Mundo:
DAKAR. - The Mafia gangs have constructed an "boat" denominated “
Titanic” at the senegalian coast that they will employ to try to transport more than one hundred illegal immigrants to the United States crossing the Atlantic Ocean, according to senegalian newspaper “Walf Fadjri”.
This immense canoa has been under construction for a month and its objective is to reach the United States, transferring as many immigrants as possible. The newspaper assures the senegalian Police already have detected strange movements around the ship and watches the goings and comings surrounding the “Titanic”.
This cayuco is made with white wood, has great dimensions and his proprietor is at the moment in prison. The senegalian newspaper emphasizes that the owner and promoter of the canoe have decided that the United States will be the destination of the indian canoa and not Spain, as usual.
Cannot make itThe Mafia organisations do not lower the guard and are trying to change the destinations and means of the "boats" to confuse the police authorities. “This boat has been under construction for more than a month and curious people come to contemplate it”, emphasizes the newspaper.
The “Titanic” is a long boat, painted in different colors, and has a depth of one meter (about 3 feet). “Walf Fadjri” assures that their editors have been able to visit the boat and adds that the Police do not think that the boat can reach the American coasts in the future.
“The wood used for the other boats that have departed already is red, whereas the one of the “Titanic” is of white wood. With the high seas it´s more than probable that the "boat" would not be able to support the weight of the bags the immigration candidates would bring”, the newspaper indicates.
While the "supercayuco" prepares its departure, tens of clandestines gather to register with the purpose of reaching the United States. The carpenter and constructor, who says he stays out of the controversy, assures that he is only a worker limiting himself to accomplish his job.
The total cost of the construction of the “Titanic” is about 1.5 to million euros.
The Titanic is not the only large canoe to depart with tens of Africans. The senegalian press also refers to the existence of another cayuco with similar dimensions that has been made in the Bargny area. They affirm that this boat, whose destiny is not known, would be on the verge to set off.
As much the senegalian coast as the mauritanian is full of cayucos that formerly were used for fishing. Now these cayucos are often being used to transport illegal immigrants. But, in addition to the cayucos, tens of bigger boats remain at the coast. For a long time, the Forces of Security have been alerting that the Mafia criminals are rehabilitating these ships to use them for cross-border human traffic.
The Forces of Security have detected that the Mafia have varied their route and are moving their operational base from Mauritania to Senegal. Therefore, the Government tries to initiate a cooperation program in Dakar similar to others that have been started in Mauritania, where the collaboration is giving good results.

The outcome of this seems quite clear: There´s no way that "boat" could reach the coast of the U.S., the passengers would die and the mafia would earn more money.
If the police, who appear to know all about it, don´t prevent it from happening of course.
By the way:
80.000 Africans
are waiting to depart towards Europe. No government could nor would handle that rate of immigration. And it´s getting worse...
